First we watched the show at my chef friend, Kerry Simon's restaurant and then everybody did the red carpet walk of fame into the Body English nightclub. It was fun to catch-up with my pal, Gavin Maloof (Palms and Sacramento Kings co-owner with brothers Joe and George), who was there to cheer on his executive assistant J.J. Jones, who is one of the show's characters.
My friends, former Playboy centerfold Destiny Davis (above with Kerry Simon), now a UNLV law student, and Hot on Vegas TV reporter Molly Sullivan (below with Anthony Cools) are just two of the cast along with Hard Rock promotion honcho Jack Lefleur(above), Jenner Evans, Rick DeJesus, Willie Hulett, Greta Jewel, April Rawlings, Lacy Reiss, Jesse Reif, and Donnie Ivins to round out the cast. Hypnotist Anthony Cools, who stars in his own show at the Paris is a mentor and guide to the good life for the cast.
Sometimes I've thought I was the busiest man in the world, but Ryan is miles ahead of me! He's not only producing 'Paradise City' and hosting 'American idol,' but he still does his morning radio show on KIIS-FM five-days-a-week, hosts the American Top 40 radio countdown show and is lead anchor and managing editor for E! News. He said: "For the last eight weeks it has been seven days around the clock every week, but I feel like I have to do it. It takes a lot of hours to get all the work done but it's not brain surgery so if you want to work that hard and fill every hour of the day then you could get it done too. To me it's a great opportunity to do fantastic shows so why not work hard?"
Unlike my 'Fames Games' show on rival VH1 90-minutes earlier on Sunday nights, 'Paradise City' (cast seen above) is not a reality contest challenge where one victim is booted off weekly. Ryan's partners from the 'Laguna Beach' TV series have produced a narrative-styled drama with no direct-to-camera interviews. This is not living together under one roof but a fascinating chronicle of their professional and personal lives as they seek success in their work and love lives. You'll think of 'Sex and the City' when you watch it and conclude Vegas is a paradise compared to Manhattan! Check it out for a unique and honest look at our bizarre dating scene and for the expected and unfamiliar sights of Vegas. Just keep a score card handy to keep the lookalike and soundalike blonde beauties separate!
By the way, our 'Fame Games' ratings have been so "through the roof" (Thanks to all of you for watching) that VH1 executives have just given us the green light for season two with a whole new cast of characters. This coming weekend is only our 8th episode so you know the reaction has been fantastic. I'll see if I can find an even tackier prom suit for the second season. Filming will get under way later this year!
A KNOCKOUT AT THE VENETIAN
What a thrill and an honor! Sitting front row, just a few feet in front of me, was the legendary former heavyweight champion of the world, Smokin' Joe Frazier and his onetime boxing son, Marvis Frazier, now a church elder in Philadelphia. We were all there to watch entertainer Gordie Brown at his theater in The Venetian and his comedy show of impressions and songs almost came to a halt when he spotted us in the audience. Obviously he picked on me and my funny loud English accent, which brought the house down. But when he spotted Joe, that's when the entire showroom audience jumped to its feet!
Backstage we all posed for photos. Said Gordie: "It was a complete surprise. I had no idea you were all in the audience. I almost didn't know what to say or do meeting such a legend. It almost made me stop the show. " Joe, now 63, was in town for a telephone convention meet and greet. He's still considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time but is most famous for his three fights against Muhammad Ali. Ironically, famous Vegas resident Bernie Yuman who, in addition to managing Gordie, Siegfried & Roy, still manages Ali's affairs today. So we got them on a cell phone together to talk about the time that Frazier beat Ali; the first time they fought. To this day it's still held in sporting circles as the greatest bout ever!
Joe won a gold medal in the 64 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and by 1966 he was undefeated in nine fights, eight by knock out. He became world champion beating Buster Mathis in an 11th round knock out in 1968 after Ali was stripped of his title for his conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War and then confirmed it again in 1970 with a fifth round KO of Jimmy Ellis. Hard to believe, as Joe recalled when we chatted with Gordie, that it was back in March of 1971 that he and Ali boxed the first of the three bouts. On hand then, he recalled, at Madison Square Garden was Woody Allen, Diana Ross, Dustin Hoffman, Burt Lancaster and Frank Sinatra, who had to work as a photographer for Life Magazine to get his ringside seat! Joe complimented Gordie on his unique show and told Bernie over the phone: "He never stopped once during the show. He has the stamina of a fighter and he's a heavyweight champion in his own right. He danced and sang without missing a beat for seventy straight minutes, which is better than I ever did in the ring!"
GRAND PRIX SETS UP
The first ever Vegas Grand Prix is one of the largest events to ever headquarter downtown and the first cornerstone track barricade has just been set up. All told, more than 2,700 barricades, measuring 12 feet in length and 39 inches thick will line the perimeter inside and outside the 2.44 mile, 12 turn street course. Thankfully, all the work is done through the night to avoid daytime tie-ups until the actual April 5-8 weekend events. In all there will be 3,000 pieces of barricade wall, 800 tire barriers and 3,000 pieces of debris fencing to keep spectators well protected from the speeding drivers and their magnificent machines.
The rumors spread like wildfire during NBA All Star weekend that MTV comic Nick Cannon had a runaway instant quickie Vegas wedding chapel marriage to stunning Victoria's Secrets model Selita Ebanks. Some tabloids even reported it as fact and Nick's silence on the subject kicked it up a notch! Here at LUXE LIFE we just raised our suspicions with a bold question mark!!! But now, even with a flashing diamond ring on her fourth finger, Selita has told friends that, although the couple has been dating for the past five weeks, they haven't married. She even bought that big bauble herself! Selita admits that she kept saying "thanks" to all her friends back in New York who congratulated her but finally wanted to set the record straight!
WEDDING CRASHERS -- FOR REAL!
It's a new monthly event that really takes the cake; the wedding cake that is! Like me, you probably laughed out loud when you saw Vince Vaughan and his sidekick Owen Wilson in 'Wedding Crashers.' Now you can do the movie story for real. Our Little Chapel of the Flowers here has arranged a 90 minute 'Wedding Crashers Night' happening during an actual wedding of a couple you've never met, so long as the new bride and groom go along with the idea of having total strangers gatecrash the ceremony! My friends Barry and Louise Berlin were the first to greenlight the zany experience when they renewed their marriage vows after 25 years of togetherness. Total strangers paid a simple $15 fee to join in the traditional service, throw rice, congratulate the bride and groom and attend their dinner, without even bringing a gift! Whitney Lloyd, the chapel's sales/marketing director told me "We provide couples with the dream wedding, all the elegance and tradition they want and then if they wish they can throw the good time, fun and romance open to anybody who wants to share their happiness with them."
A host of yesteryear's primo pop names are in the loop for next week's opening of the new Polly Esther's nightclub at the Stratosphere. Leif Garrett and the Bay City Rollers shout out loud on night one, Deborah Gibson (seen right) -- remember her being dubbed the original pop princess way before we heard word one from a Spears named Brittney -- does the honors night two and Tiffany surfaces as star of night three for the gala weekend starting Thursday March 15! LUXE LIFE has learned the multi-themed, four-room casino-level club promises four decades of music throughout the giant 26,000-square-foot facility.
The world's most famous dog Lassie, and his vet, Dr. Jeff Werber selected Jackpot and his owner KB Sisco as the winner in the "My Pet My Pal " contest, and all were at The Venetian yesterday for a gondola ride on the Venetian's canal. The contest to celebrate the bond between dog and master was sponsored by Lassie's Natural Way dog food. ... March 15, sees the opening of the Lucky Strike Lanes fusing sport, dining and nightlife at the Rio and PURE management group has locked in cutie Kristin Cavallari from 'Laguna Beach' as the celebrity guest host for the opening. The 10-lane bowling alley features a full-service bar and you can dance to your hearts content in order to "Stay Out of the Gutter." ... Actress Jennifer Tilly took a break from the Heads Up Poker Tournament at Caesars Palace to treat fellow actress and Mira Sorvino to a Rao's dinner where they feasted on clams, vodka pasta, pear and gorgonzola salad with profiteroles for dessert.
Three of our clubs hosts parties for the Nightclub and Bar convention show: Tryst at Wynn celebrates twin managing partners Cy and Jesse Waits for being the February Nightclub Magazine's issue as the cover models; TAO in The Venetian has a Nightclub Networking event and PURE has DJ AM doing a special set for conventioneers.
Former 'Saturday Night Live' hero Joe Piscopo has just started a six-week run at the Hilton and now the zany comic who croons ballads better than Frank and Dean is planning to move here. Our chuckle-filled conversation is a hilarious hoot from start to finish so don't miss it!
